BREEAM

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is an assessment and certification method that aims at improving the environmental performance of buildings. BREEAM sets standards for best practices in the sustainable design, construction and operation of buildings.

BREEAM assesses the performance of buildings in 9 environmental categories: management system, energy use, health and well-being, pollution, transport, land use, biodiversity, water and materials, with an additional category: innovation (bonus). Points are awarded for each of those aspects in light of the above criteria and the performance achieved. The total score is used to assign a level of performance: Pass, Good, Very good, Excellent, Outstanding.
